Day 6

Scripture to Read: Exodus 20:24

God gave the Israelites some specific instructions about the altar they should build where they would perform their sacrifices. God said in Exodus 20:24, “You shall make an altar of earth for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.” God wanted the altar made of earth. Then He began to explain all the different sacrifices they would bring to Him. They would offer God their burnt offerings and peace offerings, and they would be using their sheep, goats, and cattle. Many people wonder why the Israelites never ate their herds while in the wilderness. Remember, God provided them manna and quail to eat, but God never told them to eat of their herds. The answer is that the Israelites were to use their herds as offerings to God so that God would overlook their sins. With over two million people, hundreds of thousands of sacrifices would have been made to God. This is just another reminder of why the blood of Christ is so precious. Christ's blood cleanses us once and for all from all sin—the blood of animals could never do that. God knew He would be moving the Israelites, so, as they moved, they must build another altar. God was making sure His name would be remembered, and then He also promised the Israelites that He would bless them. Blessings always follow obedience (James 1:25).

Challenge & Application

· We no longer have to build altars for sacrifices, but how do you give back to God through what He’s given you? · Christ’s blood sacrifice was perfect; so, how would you tell someone why we don’t have to sacrifice animals anymore?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God had come down on Mount Sinai and laid out the Ten Commandments for the nation of Israel. What the people saw and heard was overwhelming. Remember the description God gave us in Exodus 19:18–19, “Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mo...

Day 2

Having a healthy fear of God is so important for every follower of Christ. Most of us, as Christians, can’t imagine not having a personal relationship with God through Christ. We have the freedom to talk with God the Father at all times. He is always listening because He lives in us through His Holy Spirit but for the nation of Israel, this w...

Day 3

Over the past couple of days, we’ve discussed how we need to protect ourselves from losing our reverence for God and His Holy Word. We have been given this incredible privilege to communicate with God through prayer. We’ve been given the incredible promise that God listens to our prayers because of His Holy Spirit praying with, for, and throu...

Day 4

God had shown up on Mount Sinai, and as we’ve read, the people of Israel were incredibly frightened. They had told Moses that they only wanted him to talk to God, and then he could tell them what God said. God led Moses to respond to the people in Exodus 20:20, “Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fe...

Day 5

As we know, God had already given Moses the Ten Commandments. Then, we saw in the devotion on “Day 3” that the people were too afraid to hear directly from God, and they asked Moses to speak to them what God spoke to him. Today, we read what God told Moses to share next in Exodus 20:21–23, “21 So the people stood at a distance, while Moses ap...

Day 7

We end today looking a little deeper at the altar God told the Israelites to build where they would perform their sacrifices to God. God said in Exodus 20:25–26, “If you make an altar of stone for Me, you shall not build it of cut stones, for if you wield your tool on it, you will profane it. 26 And you shall not go up by steps to My altar, s...
