Day 5

Scripture to Read: Exodus 20:21–23

As we know, God had already given Moses the Ten Commandments. Then, we saw in the devotion on “Day 3” that the people were too afraid to hear directly from God, and they asked Moses to speak to them what God spoke to him. Today, we read what God told Moses to share next in Exodus 20:21–23, “21 So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was. 22 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘You yourselves have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven. 23 You shall not make other gods besides Me; gods of silver or gods of gold, you shall not make for yourselves.” It’s interesting how God’s Word tells us that the Israelites stayed back, “at a distance,” while Moses went toward the thick cloud. We must always pursue our intimacy with God as well and never stay at a distance. Also, God had already said in Exodus 20:3–4, “You shall have no other gods before Me.” 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.” But God knew the hearts of the Israelites, that they could easily be swayed by the pagan nations around them who worshipped false gods and made them out of silver, gold, bronze, and other materials. We, too, must guard our hearts against the things this world chases after and make sure we pursue our Lord.

Challenge & Application

· In the past, how have you been like Israel and tried to stay at a safe distance from God? · How have you chased the junk of the world in the past and then realized that it never meets your needs?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God had come down on Mount Sinai and laid out the Ten Commandments for the nation of Israel. What the people saw and heard was overwhelming. Remember the description God gave us in Exodus 19:18–19, “Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mo...

Day 2

Having a healthy fear of God is so important for every follower of Christ. Most of us, as Christians, can’t imagine not having a personal relationship with God through Christ. We have the freedom to talk with God the Father at all times. He is always listening because He lives in us through His Holy Spirit but for the nation of Israel, this w...

Day 3

Over the past couple of days, we’ve discussed how we need to protect ourselves from losing our reverence for God and His Holy Word. We have been given this incredible privilege to communicate with God through prayer. We’ve been given the incredible promise that God listens to our prayers because of His Holy Spirit praying with, for, and throu...

Day 4

God had shown up on Mount Sinai, and as we’ve read, the people of Israel were incredibly frightened. They had told Moses that they only wanted him to talk to God, and then he could tell them what God said. God led Moses to respond to the people in Exodus 20:20, “Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fe...

Day 6

God gave the Israelites some specific instructions about the altar they should build where they would perform their sacrifices. God said in Exodus 20:24, “You shall make an altar of earth for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be re...

Day 7

We end today looking a little deeper at the altar God told the Israelites to build where they would perform their sacrifices to God. God said in Exodus 20:25–26, “If you make an altar of stone for Me, you shall not build it of cut stones, for if you wield your tool on it, you will profane it. 26 And you shall not go up by steps to My altar, s...
