Scripture to Read: Exodus 20:6
When we consider God’s love for us (John 3:16, Romans 5:8, Ephesians 2:4–5, 2 Thessalonians 2:16, 1 John 4:10, Revelation 1:5) and how He proved His love for us through our Lord Jesus Christ, it can be absolutely overwhelming at times. That is exactly what God said in Exodus 20:6, “but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” God shows His kindness and mercy to everyone who chooses to love Him and walk according to His Word. God tells us in James 1:25, “But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.” God loves to bless those who walk in accordance with His Word. What we need to guard against is thinking that God’s blessing means we will always be healthy, we’ll have no tests or trials, and our finances will always be beyond measure. But the stuff in this world is not what God is talking about. His blessings are from above; this life is temporary, and this earth is not our home. God tells us in Colossians 3:1–4 that we’re to stay focused on the things above, not on the temporary pleasure of this world. Even Jesus asked the question of what a man profits from gaining all this world has to offer him but misses out on a relationship with the God who created him (Matthew 16:26).
Challenge & Application
· God desires to show His lovingkindness to everyone—so why do so many people miss out on it completely?
· How have you seen God’s blessings in your life and in the lives of others who walk in obedience to our Lord?
