Scripture to Read: Exodus 20:4
When we looked at Exodus 20:3 yesterday, God said to have no other gods before Him. In other words, we are not to have anything in our lives that comes as a priority before God. Then God said in Exodus 20:4, “You shall not make for yourself an idol or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.” Going back to the false gods of the other nations around the Israelites at this time, the people of these other nations had built idols resembling their false gods. As humans, our lack of faith is astounding at times, and that has not changed much over the last six thousand years. We are people that will say, “If I don’t see it, then I’m not believing it.” The people in the days of Moses were much the same; so, they had to see their false gods to be able to worship them. So, the craftsmen of their day would use gold, silver, wood, clay, or something else and make an image representing the false god(s) the people worshipped. But our God is perfect, holy, righteous, and so much more. So, God made it clear that no one this side of heaven can see Him or has seen Him (Exodus 33:20, John 1:18, John 6:46, Colossians 1:15, 1 Timothy 6:16, 1 John 4:12). The faith we have has been given to us by Him (Romans 12:3), and we must choose to place all of our faith in Him alone.
