Scripture to Read: Exodus 20:1
When God speaks, we must not only pay attention, but we must obey what He has said. This week, we are only covering seven verses, so God is allowing us to look deeply into what He has to say to us. We start with Exodus 20:1, “Then God spoke all these words, saying.” On the Bible Gateway website at biblegateway.com, “God spoke” is used fourteen times in the NASB and eight times in the ESV. “God said” is used twenty-one times in the NASB and twenty-three times in the ESV. No doubt, those were special moments for each of those situations. So many people today claim it would be so much easier if God would speak audibly so we would know exactly what He would have us do each day. These people miss that God has already spoken, and He has given us all we need through His Word and His Holy Spirit. We don’t need anything more from Him. We must passionately pursue our daily fellowship with Him and hunger passionately for His Word so we don’t miss what He has already given us. God even tells us in 2 Peter 1:3–4, “…that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. 4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.” So, in Him we have all we need.
