Scripture to Read: Exodus 2:11–14
Moses grew up in Egypt and was raised by “Pharaoh’s daughter who took him away and nurtured him as her own son” (Acts 7:21). We also read in Acts 7:22–23, “Moses was educated in all the learning of the Egyptians, and he was a man of power in words and deeds. 23 But when he was approaching the age of forty, it entered his mind to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.” So, as we read Exodus 2:11–14, Moses went out to check on his brethren. Moses saw an Egyptian beating one of his Hebrew brothers. Moses “defended him and took vengeance for the oppressed by striking down the Egyptian” (Acts 7:24). The reason Moses defended his Hebrew brother is that Moses thought “that his brethren understood that God was granting them deliverance through him, but they did not understand” (Acts 7:25). So, Moses saw himself as the deliverer of his Hebrew brethren forty years before God spoke to him on Mount Sinai. Moses thought no one knew he killed the Egyptian, but we read in Exodus 2:13–14 and Acts 7:26–28 that everyone, including his Hebrew brethren, seemed to know. Again, Moses had taken matters into his own hands because he saw himself as the deliverer for his people. At this point, Moses’ decision was not led by God but of his own accord. We must continuously pursue our fellowship with God and His Word so that we do not run ahead of God and bring undue consequences to our lives.
Challenge & Application
· What are some ways that God moved on Moses’ behalf, and how has God moved on your behalf?
· What must we all do to ensure we do not run ahead of what God has in store for us, and how are you doing it?
