Scripture to Read: John 2:18–22
The Jews who watched Jesus drive the religious leaders out of the temple that day began to question Him. We read in John 2:18–22, “The Jews then said to Him, ‘What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?’ 19 Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ 20 The Jews then said, ‘It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?’ 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.” The Jews wanted to see a miracle as proof of Jesus having the authority to do what He did in the temple. Jesus told them that the miracle they’d see would be when He raised Himself from the dead (John 10:18). Of course, it’s obvious they were clueless as to what Jesus was talking about, for even His disciples did not fully comprehend what Jesus said until after He was raised from the dead. Even today, we must be careful not to be looking for something more for Christ to prove Himself to us. God has revealed Himself completely through His Word and then gave us His Holy Spirit to keep our eyes open to the fullness of His Truth as we read, study, and memorize it daily. Christ and His Word are all we need to live as He’s commanded.
Challenge & Application
• Why do we look for more from Christ when He’s already given us everything we need through Him? (Also see 2 Peter 1:3–9.)
• How do we guard our hearts and minds from the world’s way of thinking that there must be something more?
