Scripture to Read: John 20:11–18
When Peter and John ran to the tomb, Mary followed them because she wanted to know who had taken the body of Jesus. Be sure to read John 20:11–18. As Mary stood outside the tomb, she continued to weep, still thinking that the body of Jesus had been stolen. As she looked into the tomb, two angels had appeared and asked Mary (in John 20:13),’“Woman, why are you weeping?” Mary responded, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.’” Mary was feeling hopeless, but then, miraculously, Jesus appeared. Mary did not know it was Jesus, for she thought it might have been the gardener who cared for the grounds. Jesus also asked Mary why she was weeping. Mary said to Jesus, again, assuming He was the gardener,”’“Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.’” But then, Jesus called Mary by name, and immediately Mary knew it was Jesus. We don’t know why Mary didn’t recognize Jesus at first; all we know is that when Jesus said her name, then she knew. No doubt Mary grabbed Jesus, for Jesus said to her, ““Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’”Jesus didn’t tell her not to do something but to stop so she could go and tell the disciples Jesus’ news.
Challenge & Application
• In times when you doubted some truth about Jesus, how did Jesus reveal Himself to you and assure you of who He is?
• Jesus wants us to fulfill what He’s called us to do; so, what has He called you to stop doing so you can do what He’s commanded?
