Scripture to Read: John 2:13
Our Lord Jesus Christ, while living here on earth, knew the incredible importance of the Passover. And, of course, He would since He is God. As a reminder for us, the Passover was established by God in Exodus 12. God taught Moses and Aaron how to prepare for the Passover. Moses and Aaron then taught the people of Israel how to prepare so they were ready for the deliverance God would provide for them as He set them free from Egypt. The Israelites had lived in Egypt for four hundred and thirty years, but they had been in bondage to the Egyptians for four hundred years (Genesis 15:13, Exodus 12:40–41, Acts 7:6). God told the Israelites that they would observe the Passover every year as a remembrance of Him delivering them. God tells us in Numbers 9:5, “They observed the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did.” God also tells us in Deuteronomy 16:1, “Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover to the Lord your God, for in the month of Abib the Lord your God brought you out of Egypt by night.” So, Jesus went to Jerusalem to observe the covenant He had established with the
Israelites. Jesus knew He was the final Lamb of God to be sacrificed for all mankind so that everyone could be eternally delivered from the bondage of sin. Never forget what Christ has done for you!
Challenge & Application
• Why did Jesus go to Jerusalem, and why was the Passover so significant?
• How do we, as Christians, remember what our Lord did for us, and why is this so significant? (See 1 Corinthians 11:23–29 for help.)
