Scripture to Read: Colossians 4:1
God did not just use Paul to speak to servants, but God also had Paul directly speak to all employers. God had Paul write in Colossians 4:1, “Masters, grant to your slaves justice and fairness, knowing that you too have a Master in heaven.” God does not want anyone to be treated unjustly or unfairly by anyone. God even reminds all those in charge of others that they too have a Master, God Himself, and that they will give an account to Him for how they treated those under their authority. God will have the final word on everyone’s life, and all will give an account for how they served and treated others. God had Paul write it this way in Ephesians 6:9, “And masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.” All “masters” must show goodwill to those under them, and they must not use threats or abusive language to seek to motivate those whom they are in charge of. God even adds in Ephesians 6:9 that He does not show partiality; therefore, those who are employers, bosses, and authorities must not show partiality either. God wants those in authority to lead as Christ did. Christ did not come to be served, but to serve. Christ set the perfect example for anyone in a position of authority. For all authorities who choose to follow Christ’s example and bring Him glory, God will in turn use them to help lead others to Christ as Lord.
Challenge & Application
How does God speak to all people who hold positions of authority, and whose example are they to follow and why?
Who will those in authority give an account to and why is this so significant?
