Scripture to Read: Colossians 3:22
God desires all families to be healthy and to thrive in this life. God desires to use those healthy families as examples to those who do not know Christ yet as their Lord and Savior. But God also desires all of His children to be salt and light in the workplace. God had Paul write in Colossians 3:22, “Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.” Today, no one is called a slave but most are called employees. As followers of Christ, God expects us to be salt and light to our employers and to those with whom we work. God tells us that we must obey those we work for, and it’s not just doing a good job when they are watching, but it’s doing an excellent job when no one is watching. God does not want any of His children to fall into the trap of being “men-pleasers” (those who only work hard if someone is constantly watching over them). God reminds all employees that as employees, we do not actually work for a company or an earthly boss. Therefore, we must do our job with integrity and with a sincere heart because we want to honor and please our Lord, for He is who we will give an account to for how we did our work while here on earth. God had Paul write something similar in Ephesians 6:5–8, helping us understand that we work for Christ in all we do.
Challenge & Application
Why are we, as employees, to do our work for Christ and not for our employer or for a company?
How are you doing your work (schoolwork, job responsibilities, etc.) for the Lord and not for men?
Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!
