Scripture to Read: Acts 1:6
We can all think of a time in our past when our parents told us about a fun trip they planned for us and how we couldn’t wait for that trip to happen. While we waited, we probably asked our parents daily when that special day would arrive. Though they would give us the same answer, we still seemed to want to know, so we’d ask again and again. As our Lord Jesus Christ was preparing to leave and go to heaven, His apostles asked Him a question they had asked many times before. God’s Word says, in Acts 1:6, So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” When the apostles asked this question, many translations say they asked Him “repeatedly.” We can all imagine each of them asking, “Is it now?” and repeating it over and over. Now, our Lord wants us to live expectantly for His return because that day will be glorious (Colossians 3:1–4), but our Lord does not want us to live so focused on His return that we miss the good works He has for us to fulfill each day (Ephesians 2:10, Titus 2:14, Titus 3:8, Titus 3:14). Christ had a work for His apostles to do, and He has a work for us to accomplish while we’re here. To live with great expectation of our Lord’s return is good, but we must never let the anticipation distract us from the work of the ministry.
Challenge & Application
Why should we live with the expectation that our Lord could return any day?
Christ has a work for each of us to accomplish, so how are you currently doing the good works He has for you to do?
