Scripture to Read: Acts 1:1–2
We are preparing for our church's 75th Anniversary, so we will break from the book of Romans and examine the first four chapters of the book of Acts for the next four weeks. This week we’ll see what God has to say in Acts 1:1–14. God led Luke to write the book of Acts. God also used Luke to write the Gospel of Luke. God had Luke write both books to Theophilus (Luke 1:3, Acts 1:1). Many want to know who Theophilus was since God used Luke to write to him. But no one knows who Theophilus was. We do not know because God never reveals to us who Theophilus was in His Word. We know that God led Luke to write to Theophilus, according to Luke 1:4, so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught. God gave us His Word so everyone may know the truth about our Lord Jesus Christ. God used Luke to provide a reliable, historical account of the events surrounding Jesus’ life to help Theophilus, and all readers of His Word, understand who Jesus is and what He had done. God had Luke begin Acts 1:1–2 with a reminder that Luke’s first letter was “about all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles.” So, Acts is a continuation of Christ’s work through His church, both then and what He is still doing now.
Challenge & Application
We know God gave us His Word to know Him and His Work through Christ; so how are you examining God’s Truth daily?
How have you seen God transform your life through His Word, and how has His Truth set you free?
Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!
