Scripture to Read: 2 Peter 2:17–22
God finishes by calling the false teachers, and every person who refuses to surrender to Christ as Lord, dried-up springs or mists that are blown away by the wind, in 2 Peter 2:17. God continues to give a clear description in 2 Peter 2:18–22 of what the false teachers are doing and the outcome of what they have brought upon themselves. Many people think the false teachers and the other lost souls who follow them were actually saved at one time. To believe that they were saved means we also have to believe that people can lose their salvation. But that is not what God’s Word says about salvation, nor is it what God is saying about the false teachers. These lost souls have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Just because someone has a head knowledge of our Lord and enjoys the benefits of being around saved souls does not mean the lost souls are saved by their knowledge. It just means that the lost souls have gained a head knowledge of our Lord, and they have tasted God’s goodness through the Christians they are around. This describes my life up until I was 19 years old. I had the head knowledge of Christ, but I was still lost in my sin. But the false teachers and other lost souls who choose to refuse Christ and return to their lost lifestyles are still being held captive by the devil to do His will (2 Timothy 2:25–26).
