Day 4

Scripture to Read: 1 Timothy 5:5-6

Today in 1 Timothy 5:5-6, through Paul, God contrasts the widow who knows Him with the widow who is still lost in her sin. The widow who knows God, who has a personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ, spends her days trusting completely in God to provide for her. The widow who knows Christ as Lord also spends her days and nights praying. She spends her time asking God to meet her needs (Philippians 4:19). She finds her peace and rest in God as she focuses on Him and His Word, choosing not to be anxious about her situation but enjoying her sweet fellowship with Him (Philippians 4:6-8). She continually renews her mind through reading, studying, and memorizing God’s Word so that she does not fall into temptation and sin against God (Psalms 119:9-11; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5; Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 4:23). She continually chooses to long for the pure milk of God’s Word (1 Peter 2:2-3), knowing she has tasted of His kindness through her salvation and His provision in her life. By contrast, the widow who is still lost in her sin lives for nothing more than the momentary, empty pleasures of this world. She has chosen to chase after what this world has to offer her (Romans 1:21-25), and she has exchanged God’s Truth for the lies of this world. She has become darkened in her heart and mind, by her own choice to settle for nothing more than the garbage of this world (Ephesians 4:17-19).

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about the difference between the two widows? 2. How are you experiencing the same sweetness of your daily fellowship with God and His Word as the saved widow does?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!
