Scripture to Read: 1 Timothy 5:3
Today we begin to see how God gave to Timothy (and all of us) specific instructions on how Timothy was (and we are) to take care of the widows in the church family and our own families. Today we read what God tells Timothy (and us) concerning those widows who are alone with no family to take care of them. God has commanded the church, we as believers, to be the ones to take care of widows who have no family. Taking care of widows is not the job of our government, though many people think the government ought to be the ones fulfilling this role. As His children, God wants us to be His hands and feet and love those widows among us by taking care of their needs. God says it this way through James in James 1:27, “ Pure and unblemished religion [as it is expressed in outward acts] in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit and look after the fatherless and the widows in their distress, and to keep oneself uncontaminated by the [secular] world.” AMP Taking care of widows is not very high on many people’s list of priorities. But God makes it very clear that taking care of widows is a priority for us and, as His children, we better be fulfilling His command. God has given us an incredible privilege to meet the needs of our widows. As a church family, we all need to be involved in serving in this ministry.
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about the ministry to widows our church family is to have?
2. How (are you) or (do you see yourself) helping in the ministry to widows within our church body?
Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!
