Day 5

Scripture to Read: 1 Peter 2:9

As God's children, we are called to live holy, blameless, obedient lives to Him as our Heavenly Father. God shows us throughout His Word that we are to live holy and we've already seen it here in 1 Peter 1. Today, in 1 Peter 2:9, our Lord says, "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession." God lovingly led Peter to use four phrases to describe us as His children (see Exodus 19:6). Each description is essential for us to realize our identity in Christ. First, as God's children, we are "a chosen race." Being chosen by God brings great joy and comfort; joy, because we know He chose us long before we ever chose Him (see 1 John 4:8-9, 19); and comfort, because we know we truly belong to Him. Second, we are "a royal priesthood," reminding us, as Christians, that we offer our lives as a sacrifice to God by living in obedience to Him no matter the cost. Third, we're described as "a holy nation," again knowing we live from the pure heart we have in Christ, and we pursue His kingdom in every area of our lives (Matthew 6:33). Fourth, we are "a people for His own possession." We belong to God and are sealed by His Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). Understanding these four descriptions helps us see our identity in Christ. We learn who we are as God's children, called to serve Him, set apart as holy, and owned by Him. Rest in the identity of who God says you are.

Challenge & Application

1. God reminds us of how we are to live holy lives as His children. How are you living holy each day? 2. God reminds us of our true identity in Him; so, knowing what God taught you today, how differently do you see yourself now?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

In today's devotion, God makes it clear that those who have tasted that our Lord is good are those who have surrendered to Christ as Lord (Psalm 34:8; 1 Peter 2:3). But, for all of us who have tasted our Lord's goodness, we must realize that God's way is not man's way. As our Lord spoke to the first believers suffering for their faith, and as...

Day 2

In 1 Peter 2:5, God the Father shows us that to follow Christ means to be conformed to His image, "you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." As Jesus was called "a living stone," all followers of Christ are "like living stone...

Day 3

So far, God has used the imagery of the "living stone" to describe our Lord Jesus Christ and remind us, as His followers, that we are "like living stones." God's purpose for doing this is to show all believers how Jesus Christ fulfills the Old Testament prophecies of “the living stone.” In 1 Peter 2:6, God led Peter to quote Isaiah 28:16, "Fo...

Day 4

Yesterday we learned how those who believe in Jesus as the Cornerstone are never put to shame in God the Father. Today, the Lord clearly shows us what happens to those who choose not to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as being their King and Lord. Those who choose not to believe in Christ will not receive honor, and they will stumble because...

Day 6

As God's people, He has given us an identity to carry out His mission. So, as we know who we are as His people, we choose to live out His mission as well. We see God's purpose for our lives in the second part of 1 Peter 2:9, "that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." So, God has gi...

Day 7

For the last two days, we have looked at our identity, which we have as God's children. We have also clearly seen the mission God has called us to fulfill. Since we have this new identity in Christ and have been called on this incredible mission for God, we need to remember that the only reason we can do this is that Christ has transformed us...
