Day 3

Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 6:5a

God does not like it when we handle things the way the world handles things. God has given us a new life, and He expects us to live that new life and to cast aside the old life. God tells us in Colossians 3:5–9 to “consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. 6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, 7 and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices.” Then, God reminds us in Colossians 3:10–11 that because of His Holy Spirit in us, we “have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him— 11 a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all.” Since God has so radically changed us, we should continually guard against our fleshly nature having any control over the decisions we make each day. But the believers in Corinth were acting fleshly, so, God had Paul write in 1 Corinthians 6:5a, “I say this to your shame.” We must live so that God is never dishonored by us.

Challenge & Application

Why does God expect us to live differently than we did before we had surrendered our lives to Him? How were the believers in Corinth dishonoring God, and how do we guard against doing this through our lives?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

The believers in Corinth definitely struggled with some issues of the flesh. As we have seen so far, they had to be lovingly rebuked for arguing over their spiritual mentors and they had an issue with their pridefulness. Then, God led Paul to write to the believers about how they should handle civil disputes. We read in 1 Corinthians 6:1–2, “...

Day 2

As we learned in yesterday’s devotion, God wanted the believers in Corinth to handle their civil disputes within the church and not within the local court system. God had Paul also write this in 1 Corinthians 6:3–4, “Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life? 4 So if you have law courts dealing with matters...

Day 4

God had Paul continue by asking two more questions in 1 Corinthians 6:5–6, “Is it so, that there is not among you one wise man who will be able to decide between his brethren, 6 but brother goes to law with brother, and that before unbelievers?” God used Paul to get the believers in Corinth to examine why they had been taking each other to ci...

Day 5

Being willing to listen to our Lord and His Word keeps us from sinning and making incredibly unwise decisions, but when we’re not listening to our Lord and walking in obedience to His Word, we’ll reap the consequences. God had Paul write this in 1 Corinthians 6:7–8, “Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with ...

Day 6

God used Paul to warn both the believers in Corinth (and us) that we must not go outside the body of believers to deal with civil disputes. Christians should not allow lost people to counsel them in civil disputes because God has already given us His Word, His Holy Spirit, and other godly Christians to help us. God gives an incredible reason ...

Day 7

God laid out in 1 Corinthians 6:9–10 those who will not inherit His Kingdom. But then, God had Paul also write this in 1 Corinthians 6:11, “Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.” What an incredible reminder that every Chris...
