Day 2

Scripture to Read: Romans 4:4–5

Justification (being made right with God) has always been an issue for people. People want to be able to say, “Look what I did,” “Look what I brought to God so He will accept me as one of His.” Too many people cannot understand that being justified by God has nothing to do with what they’ve done, but it has everything to do with what God has done for them. God used Paul to give us a great illustration in Romans 4:4–5, “Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness.” So, God uses the example of someone who has a job. That person gets paid for their work each day, and their pay is not a gift, but they have earned their pay through their work. But when it comes to being made righteous before God, people don’t gain their righteousness through the “good works” they do. But people can only be made righteous by God through our Lord Jesus Christ. The righteousness of God is given to everyone who chooses to place their faith in God through Christ. The reason righteousness comes from God through Christ is that God is the only one who can forgive sinners because Christ’s blood is the only thing that can wash us as sinners clean from our sin. God offers us His righteousness as a gift through Christ.

Challenge & Application

What did God teach you about His righteousness, and how do people gain His righteousness? How should we, as believers, be living knowing God’s righteousness lives in us through His Holy Spirit?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We saw last week, in Romans 3, how God used Paul to ask some critical questions about every person being justified before God through faith. As we unpack Romans 4 this week, God has Paul start with another question in Romans 4:1, “What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?” So, God has Paul ask the ...

Day 3

The beauty of God’s Word is that every portion of it ties together. When we study and memorize God’s Word, we should always examine the cross-references as God reveals to us His Truth being repeated. God wants us to know the fullness of Him through His Word. Also, through God’s Truth, we see the fullness of ourselves through all God offers us...

Day 4

As we continue our walk through Romans 4, today we focus on Romans 4:9–12. God had Paul ask this question and then include a quantifying statement in Romans 4:9: “Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, ‘Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.’” As we have discussed in earlier devotions, man...

Day 5

Today, we continue our journey on how God justifies each soul who surrenders to Him by trusting in Him and His promises. Over 2,000 years ago, the Jews struggled with God justifying the Gentiles, and today, people still struggle with God justifying anyone who humbly comes to Him and trusts in Him completely. We hear people today ask if people...

Day 6

We find today, in Romans 4:16–19, God hammering home how everyone inherits the promise He made to Abraham in Genesis 15. Inheriting God’s promise depends entirely on us placing our faith in God and His promise, which was fulfilled in Christ. God gives us the fullness of His promise through His abundant grace (God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense)...

Day 7

God’s Word transforms lives, and we need to make sure we abide in His Word daily so we do not waver in unbelief. We close out today with Romans 4:20–25. God’s Word speaks for itself, so, sharing from the Amplified Version of the Bible, we see what God has Paul write about Abraham’s faith in Romans 4:20–22, “But he did not doubt or waver in un...
