Scripture to Read: Romans 13:4
As we continue our walk through Romans 13 this week, in Romans 13:4, God tells us that His authorities are His servants/ministers sent for our good. Remember we talked about this in yesterday’s devotion, that God uses godly and ungodly authorities to lovingly discipline His children when we get out of fellowship with our Lord (Hebrews 12:7–11). But then God comes back to remind us that anyone doing wrong should be afraid, for the authorities God has in place have the power to bring His punishment. Of course, most people want to avoid punishment, but there are those who think, “I’ll be fine and even if I suffer, it won’t be that bad.” For anyone to even think this way is like spitting in the face of God and telling Him to “Bring it on.” We must choose an attitude of humility, and no matter who the authorities are in our lives, we need to constantly ask God not to let us miss what He is teaching us as we willingly submit to those authorities. As we submit to the authorities over us, we bring honor to God. God says it this way in 1 Peter 2:13–15: “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. 15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.” Submission is God’s will.
Challenge & Application
• Why is it so important for us to submit to the authorities in our lives?
• What has God taught you through the current authorities in your life?
