Scripture to Read: Romans 6
As God led Paul to pen the words in the book of Romans, as believers, we reap the benefit of feeding on the richness of God’s Holy Word. In Romans 6, God lets us know that as His children, we must continually live in the new life He’s given us through our Lord Jesus Christ. God reminds us that without Christ, we were dead in our sins. But since we were united with Christ, we’ve been given life because Christ is Life. That means we’ve been resurrected from death because our old way of life was crucified with Christ on the cross. God also tells us that Christ is never to die again and that death will never be master over our Lord again. So, since death has no reign over our Lord, sin should never reign over us again. In Romans 6:12–14, we find that God tells us we must not let sin rule over us. Since God tells us this, that means that because of Christ in us, we have His power to overcome all temptations (1 Corinthians 10:13) and live in complete obedience to Him (2 Peter 1:3–9). We choose to surrender our lives to our Lord’s control each day or to surrender to our fleshly nature, but the choice is ours! God reminds us that we were slaves to sin (2 Timothy 2:25–26) but because of Christ, we’ve become enslaved to God. Slavery seems like a negative word but being a slave to God is life while being a slave to sin is death. The choice is ours.
Challenge & Application
What we have in Christ is life and not death, so why do Christians choose to live in sin resulting in death?
From what God taught you today, how do we guard against choosing sin and death?
