Scripture to Read: Matthew 6:3–4
When we give, we must always remember that God knows the intent of our hearts. God says in Jeremiah 17:10, “I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds.” God also reminds us in Hebrews 4:13, “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.” So, even if we think we’re fooling everyone else, we never fool God. He knows our every thought and the intent behind our thoughts and actions. There may be people who seem genuine to us but are wolves in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15). We should not be surprised by this because we know that Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44). We must be sure that we serve and give in the way that Christ has commanded. We must guard against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11) seeking to trip us up and rob God of His glory as we serve Him by serving others. There will come times when we’re tempted to brag about giving, serving, or helping others in need. Often, these temptations come when someone else is recognized for doing something similar to what we have done but they have been recognized and we have not. This is nothing but a tool of the enemy to get us to stumble by seeking the praise of men over being a bond-servant of Christ.
