Scripture to Read: 2 Samuel 11
Sin will always lead to more sin when there’s no repentance because most people try to hide their sin. In 2 Samuel 11:5-17, we read that when Bathsheba got word to David that she was pregnant, David, instead of confessing his sin and repenting, tried to hide his sin of adultery. David sent word to Joab, the commander of his army, to send home Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband. David hoped that Uriah would wash up, go home and have some intimate time with his wife, Bathsheba. Then Uriah would think he got his wife pregnant and David would be off the hook. David did not count on Uriah being a man of integrity, having high respect for his king and the men he served with in battle. When David asked Uriah why he did not go to his house, Uriah replied, in 2 Samuel 11:11, “The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in temporary shelters, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I will not do this thing.” After hearing this, we would hope David’s heart would break, recognizing Uriah was displaying such integrity. But David did not break, and he did not repent. David set out to commit the sin of murder, seeking to hide his original sin of adultery. Remember, sin always brings death and in this case, it was Uriah’s death.
