Scripture to Read: Luke 2:13–17
We read today in Luke 2:13–14, “And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.’” God’s Word reveals that after the one angel spoke to the shepherds, hundreds, or maybe even thousands (an exact number is not given), of angels were there before the shepherds. But this time, the shepherds were not afraid. One might think the shepherds would have all run for their lives, but they didn’t. These angels were praising God, and we can only imagine how beautiful a sound the shepherds heard as these angels praised the God of all creation. The shepherds were at such peace that when the angels left, they did not talk about what they had just seen. Instead, they said in Luke 2:15,…“Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.” The shepherds wanted to see what they had been told about our Lord Jesus Christ’s birth. The shepherds wasted no time, as Luke 2:16 tells us, “So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.” Once they saw our Lord, the shepherds declared, according to Luke 2:17, “the statement which had been told them about this Child.” The shepherds didn’t talk about the angels; they declared Christ. We also must declare our Lord to this lost world.
