Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 1:67–69

As we walk through the Book of Luke, we must remember that God had not used anyone to prophesy for 400 years but He had been silent. But as we have been reading through Luke 1, we have read how God spoke through Gabriel in Luke 1:13–17 and in Luke 1:28–36. Then, God filled Elizabeth with His Holy Spirit and spoke through her in Luke 1:42–45. God then spoke through Mary in Luke 1:46–55. And, as we read over the next few days, we’ll examine how God spoke through Zacharias in Luke 1:68–79. As God spoke through His angel Gabriel and through Elizabeth, Mary, and Zacharias, everything that was proclaimed was all connected to the coming of our Lord Jesus and the work He was coming to do to save mankind from the power and penalty of sin. Zacharias began by proclaiming in Luke 1:68, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people.” God the Son was still in Mary’s womb, but He had come into the world to redeem the world from their sin, starting with the nation of Israel. The people of Israel had not experienced or heard anything new from God for 400 years, and now the silence was broken. Next, God had Zacharias speak in Luke 1:69, “And has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David His servant.” Jesus is the horn of salvation (Psalm 18:2), our mighty Savior from the lineage of David for all who come to Him.

Challenge & Application

God broke His silence after 400 years; so, how are you listening to God each day and what is He teaching you? Just as God used Elizabeth, Mary, and Zacharias, He uses us today; so, how is God using you?

Our Lord worked miraculously on behalf of Zacharias and Elizabeth. We read in Luke 1:57–58, “Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had displayed His great mercy toward her; and they were rejoicing with her.” We need to remember that Elizabeth had ...

Day 2

God was fulfilling His plan and He was using Elizabeth and Zacharias in doing so. We read in Luke 1:59–63, “And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, after his father. 60 But his mother answered and said, “No indeed; but he shall be called John.” 61 And they said to he...

Day 3

Zacharias had shown a lack of faith in Luke 1:18–20, “Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.” 19 The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behol...

Day 5

God used Zacharias mightily to proclaim many things about our Lord Jesus Christ. We read in Luke 1:70–72, “As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old—71 Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; 72 To show mercy toward our fathers, and to remember His holy covenant.” God used the prophets of old to tell ...

Day 6

As God continued to use Zacharias to prophesy, we read in Luke 1:73–75, “The oath which He swore to Abraham our father, 74 To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, 75 In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.” God made an oath to Abraham in Genesis 22:16–24 after Abraham was w...

Day 7

As God used Zacharias to continue to proclaim His truth, we read in Luke 1:76–80, “‘And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; For you will go on before the Lord to prepare His ways; 77 To give to His people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins, 78 Because of the tender mercy of our God, with which the...
