Scripture to Read: Luke 1:46-47
This week we examine Mary's song of praise. After Mary received the news from the angel Gabriel that she would be the one to give birth to and be the mother of the Messiah, in Luke 1:26-38, she offered thanks to the Lord. Mary's song of praise was a result of what happened inside of Mary's heart. Mary starts Luke 1:46 with, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." Mary, who was at first troubled at the greeting Gabriel had given her (Luke 1:29), was transformed by the news Gabriel shared with her, and she made much of her Lord and raised her voice to glorify Him. As she magnified and glorified our Lord, her spirit rejoiced in God her Savior (Luke 1:46). Mary recognized what God was doing to bring salvation to His people; that is why Mary called Him "God my Savior" (Luke 1:47). Jesus was coming to save His people from their sins, and Mary responded to this Good News with incredible praise. The question for each of us is, "What do I offer to my Lord in response to His salvation?" As we approach this Christmas season, we must reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ, our souls must focus on celebrating Him, and our spirits must rejoice in the salvation we find in Him alone. We must guard against the distractions with things of the world, gifts received, and cherished traditions. During this Christmas season, we must display the love of our Lord Jesus Christ so others along with us will magnify our Savior and King.
Challenge & Application
1. How does God reveal to us through His Word Mary’s heart through her song of praise?
2. How will you focus on celebrating Jesus Christ this Christmas season and not get distracted by lesser things?
