Scripture to Read: Luke 10:40
God has shown us a few things about both Martha and Mary. Both of these ladies had strengths that God highlighted. But as God had Luke continue, we read in Luke 10:40, “But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, ‘Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.’” We know Martha was hospitable and also very action-oriented and service-focused. Martha took the responsibility for her household duties and hospitality seriously. God even had John record this in John 12:1–2, “Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving.” Though God’s Word says, “they made Him a supper,” we clearly see that only Martha is mentioned as the one serving. Martha was quick to act and speak and she showed concern for her Guest. But all of this action by Martha became a distraction for her. God made sure Luke pointed this out about Martha. Note too that due to Martha’s distraction with getting everything ready to feed Jesus, she actually rebukes Jesus for allowing Mary to sit at His feet instead of helping her get things ready. If we’re not careful, we can be easily distracted by the busyness of life, and as we get overwhelmed, we might find ourselves dictating to Jesus what we think He should be doing for us. We must pursue Him and His Word.
