Scripture to Read: John 5:26–30
Life is only found through a relationship with God the Father through Christ and His Holy Spirit coming to live in us. Jesus said in John 5:26, For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself. When people seek life apart from God, they will always end up empty. Nothing in this world can provide eternal life. So, before we surrendered to Christ, life was impossible for us to have because we were separated from Christ (Ephesians 2:12). But since Jesus is life, we know with certainty that all who surrender to Him as Lord (Colossians 3:4, John 11:25) receive life. But for all who refuse Christ as Lord, God has set the day for Christ to judge all who have refused His gift of love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness (Acts 17:29–31, Acts 10:40–42). Jesus also declared in John 5:28–29 that the day would come when everyone would be resurrected to everlasting life or judgment. So, Jesus made it clear that everyone, both those who have done good and those who have done evil, will live forever. Doing good and evil is not saying works save us, but it’s a reminder that how we live here testifies whether we belong to Christ. As Christians, if we die before Christ returns, we know there is a day in the future when our bodies will be resurrected (1 Corinthians 15:50–53). Jesus finished with the reminder that He never did anything He was not led to do by the Father.
