Scripture to Read: John 16:5-7
Jesus knew He’d return to the Father and wanted His disciples as prepared as possible. Jesus told them in John 16:5, “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’” We know that both Peter and Thomas had asked Jesus in John 13:36 and John 14:5 where He was going, but not because they wanted to know His destination; they wondered what would happen to them if Jesus left. The disciples were more worried about themselves, never considering what our Lord was about to face. Jesus went on to say to them in John 16:6, “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.” Jesus knew their hearts were sad because He would leave. The disciples only focused on their loss. Often, we get sidetracked by our circumstances, completely forgetting that our Lord has our lives in His hands. We fret, gripe, complain, get anxious, worry, and get depressed while never asking our Lord what He has in mind. The good news is that our Lord always has an answer if we would just listen and trust Him. Jesus had the answer for His disciples in John 16:7, “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.” They were not convinced yet, as we’ll see, but Jesus’ promise would be life-changing for them all.
Challenge & Application
• Why do we often go to our Lord as a last resort when facing overwhelming circumstances instead of going to Him first?
• How are you learning to rest and trust in our Lord, knowing His Spirit lives in you?
