Scripture to Read: John 1:29
We read in John 1:29, “The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’” Here, we read that Christ showed up and when He did, John the Baptist immediately testified of Who Christ was (and, of course, still is). Christ is the Holy Lamb of God as spoken of in Isaiah 53:7, “He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth.” Christ is our pure and spotless lamb who surrendered Himself to pay the penalty for all our sins. God led Peter to proclaim it this way in 1 Peter 1:18–19, “knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” John the Baptist was led by God to testify that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah. Christ came to save sinners (Matthew 1:21) and to take away sins (1 John 3:5). We must proclaim Christ to the world around us, letting people know that only through Christ can they be completely cleansed of all their sins and be set free from sin’s bondage (Colossians 1:13–14, Colossians 2:13–14). Like John the Baptist, we must not be silent or cower when people disagree, but boldly proclaim our Lord.
Challenge & Application
• How do you prepare each day to be a bold witness for Christ, knowing He is “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world?”
• How have you seen Christ’s work in the people you’ve shared with and prayed for?
