Day 5

Scripture to Read: Genesis 16:7-16

We need to see here today that no matter how bad we mess things up, God never forsakes His children. As we read Genesis 16:7-14, we read how God showed up and intervened. We know it was our Lord because God’s Word calls Him “the angel of the LORD.” Most theologians believe that “the angel of the LORD” was the pre-incarnate appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, it could not be God the Father because God says in His Word in John 1:18, John 6:46, Colossians 1:15, and in 1 John 4:12 that no one has seen Him at any time. Also, when we compare Scripture with Scripture, we know that “the angel of the LORD” also appeared to Abraham in Genesis 22, Moses in Exodus 3, Balaam in Numbers 22, Israel in Judges 2, Gideon in Judges 6, David in 2 Samuel 24, and Elijah in 1 Kings 19. Our Lord asks Hagar, in Genesis 16:8, where she is going. Hagar answers that she is fleeing from Sarai. The Lord tells Hagar in Genesis 16:9 to return to Sarai and submit to Sarai (Titus 2:9-10; Ephesians 6:5, Colossians 3:22; 1 Timothy 6:1). God is always honored when we serve Him by serving with submission to the authorities over us (bosses, teachers, police officers, etc…). Our Lord also promised Hagar in Genesis 16:10 that He would multiply her offspring too large to number. God always keeps His promises, so we can always trust Him.

Challenge & Application

What did God teach you today about His provision and about trusting Him? How are you trusting God in all seven areas of your life (spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally, socially, financially, sexually)?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We will try to unpack three chapters of Genesis this week, so we have a lot to cover. The opening of Genesis 15 is God’s response to Abram’s denial in Genesis 14 to take the goods from the king of Sodom as a reward. As a result of Abram’s obedience to God, the Lord tells Abram in Genesis 15:1, “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward s...

Day 2

As we examine Genesis 15:7, we see how God affirms to Abram who He is and that He WILL give Abram and his descendants the land of Canaan to possess it. But Abram still asks the Lord in Genesis 15:8, how am I to know that I shall possess it? Even though Abram had just been counted as righteous in Genesis 15:6 because he fully believed God, Abr...

Day 3

We know, from reading Genesis 15, that God established His covenant with Abram. But, as we begin our journey through Genesis 16, we find that Sarai and Abram decide they will take matters into their own hands. As we read Genesis 16:1-3, we see that Sarai decides that Abram needs to take Hagar, Sarai’s Egyptian servant, and have a child throug...

Day 4

Yesterday we saw that Abram and Sarai chose to try and fulfill God’s promise their way. But we know that our decisions based on our feelings, if they don’t line up with God’s Truth will always lead to death. As we read Genesis 16:4-6, we find that Hagar saw herself as better than Sarai once she knew she had conceived a baby in her womb, and H...

Day 6

As we begin today, we open with Genesis 17. If we’re not careful, we miss the fact that we have just fast-forwarded thirteen years between the end of Genesis 16 and the opening of Genesis 17. So, as far as we know, our Lord was silent with Abram for thirteen years. Then God appears to Abram and reminds him in Genesis 17:1-8 of the covenant He...

Day 7

As we wrap up this week, we see in Genesis 17:15-21 that just as God had given Abraham a new name, God also gave Sarai (meaning my princess, signifying she belongs to only one family) a new name, Sarah (meaning a princess, signifying she is the princess to a multitude). As God gave Sarai her new name, God made it clear in Genesis 17:16 that “...
