Scripture to Read: Exodus 22:16–17, 21–24; 23:1–3, 6–7, 9
Today is another long list of details from our Heavenly Father on how to love our neighbor as ourselves. We start with the protection of single women (Exodus 22:16–17). God never intended for any woman to be treated as an object, unloving, or with disrespect. Each woman is made in God’s image, and no man ever has the right to take advantage of her. God also gives us details on how to treat strangers in Exodus 22:21 and Exodus 23:9. Strangers would be people who are not from our country or have nothing in common with our heritage and culture. God wants all people from all walks of life to be treated with the highest regard and respect. God also gives a warning on how to treat widows and orphans in Exodus 22:22–24 and then deals with how to protect pregnant women in Exodus 21:22–25. God deals harshly with those who afflict widows and orphans, which again shows His lovingkindness for those who need more help. God even tells us in James 1:27, “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” God always wants the orphans and widows cared for and as believers, He says this is a sign of our true worship of Him. Then God reminds us not to bear false witness—so, no lying about anyone or anything, as stated in Exodus 23:1–3, and that we never pervert justice (Exodus 23:6–7).
