Scripture to Read: Colossians 3:12–14
God told us we must put on the new self, but then God led Paul to give specifics on what that new self should look like. God had Paul write in Colossians 3:12–14, “So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.” What a great reminder God first gives us in the fact that He chose us long before we ever chose to surrender to Christ as Lord. Once we did surrender, that is when we became holy, through Christ in us, and beloved by God the Father because we became one of His children (1 John 3:1–2). The characteristics of Christ in us are evident as we display a “heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” These characteristics of Christ are to be enjoyed by everyone we come in contact with. Through our lives, people should be able to experience the fullness of God’s “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” God wants to use us as His representatives (2 Corinthians 5:20–21) so others will surrender to Christ as Lord and be fully reconciled to God the Father through Christ. We are also to forgive others in the same way God has forgiven us through Christ, fully, totally, and completely. We do all of this through God’s love (Romans 5:5).
