Scripture to Read: 1 Timothy 3:2
Through Paul, God gives specific qualifications for a pastor. Most of these qualifications should be evident in all believers because God calls all believers to be imitators of Him (Ephesians 5:1-2). First, a pastor “must be above reproach.” The word reproach means to be reprimanded, rebuked, or reproved. A pastor is to live a blameless life. To live blameless does not mean that this man will never sin. But living blameless does mean that a pastor is so passionately pursuing Christ and His Word that he seeks to honor the Lord in all he does and says so that his life is a great example to follow. A pastor is also to be faithful to his wife. He is to live according to God’s command in Ephesians 5:25-33 and 1 Peter 3:7. This does not mean that a man cannot be a pastor if he is single, for that is not what God’s Word says. But a married pastor better be completely devoted to his wife so others can model their marriage after his. Then God says that a pastor must be “temperate” (self-controlled, sober-minded). In other words, not a hot-head, but someone who controls their emotions. A pastor must also be “prudent” (sensible, wise, full of common sense), walking in the fullness of God’s wisdom as described in James 3:17. Finally, a pastor must be respectable (have a good reputation), hospitable (enjoys hosting others, even strangers), and able to teach. God desires that each pastor and believer live so others see Him through us.
