Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 7:7–9
There are many instances in God’s Word where God has allowed one of His writers to share personal convictions and thoughts. God uses those to remind us that though it’s a personal thought, it is still worth praying through. God had Paul continue, as we read in 1 Corinthians 7:7–9, “Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am. However, each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that. 8 But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I. 9 But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.” God allowed Paul to share how he wished that every person would simply remain single and totally sold out to serving our Lord. But then, God had Paul remind them that “each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that.” Every Christian has been given gifts from God, and some are called to be married and some are called to be single. Neither one is better than the other; it’s just a reminder that whatever God has called us to, we must fulfill His calling in a manner that honors and glorifies Him. God also had Paul give the widows and all who were still single a good word, that if their passion for marriage was strong they must follow through on getting married. Whatever God has called us to, let’s fulfill it for His glory.
