Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 4:2–4
In 1 Corinthians 4:2, God used Paul to tell us, “In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy.” Because the great commission is so enormous, every steward (born-again believer) must be faithful to carry out God’s commands. Being a faithful servant of our Lord means we will not compromise, make excuses, or seek the easy way out. Being judged by those around us can be incredibly beneficial when it is done in a godly manner, but we should never just rely on human judgment. God had Paul write this in 1 Corinthians 4:3, “But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself.” God had Paul communicate that it did not matter how he might be evaluated by the believers in Corinth. Paul did not even trust his own judgment of himself. When we judge ourselves, we usually fall short of an accurate judgment. God had Paul write this in 1 Corinthians 4:4, “For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord.” God had Paul communicate that his conscience was clear. But then, God had Paul say that just because he felt good about himself did not prove his feelings were true. The Lord’s examination of us decides if we are faithful stewards of His, but as good stewards, we must also come alongside each other and help hold each other accountable.
