I recently read an amazing book called On The Block by pastor Doug Logan of Epiphany Fellowship in Camden, NJ. This book was extremely practical in equipping the church to be a sent people into the neighborhoods and communities surrounding them. As Disciple Makers, we must have a constant rhythm in our lives of building relationships and sharing the gospel with lost people, and as they respond, equipping them to know and follow Jesus to the point of reproducing. With that said, we need to have a plan for mission. We need a strategic area or group of people in which we are fishing for men and women. We must also be teaching those we are discipling to do the same. Pastor Logan lays that out beautifully in his book. I was able to find a short article of him describing an everyday missional encounter that I think relates to any context. It is formed around the strategy of what I like to call a gospel meeting. This is simply meeting a new person and starting a normal conversation that leads to an invitation to talk about the gospel at another time.
I love the gospel meeting because if the person agrees to meet with you there's no guessing of what you want to talk about, and you are able to hear their story as well as thoroughly discuss the gospel using scripture. There are three elements of the gospel meeting:
- Their story – "So tell me about yourself."
- Your story – your testimony
- His story – "Can I share with you the news about Jesus?"
No matter the approach, we should all have a strategic place of mission. Spend some time thinking and praying about what yours will be in 2018. In this article Pastor Logan describes his. I pray it's strokes some ideas.
