Day 1

Scripture to Read: Matthew 1:18

God used Matthew, just as He also used Luke in the Gospel of Luke, to show us that Christ was fully human and fully God. Jesus was completely human because He was born of a woman and Jesus was, and of course, is and always will be, 100% God, because the seed planted in Mary was from the Holy Spirit. The only way Jesus could be the perfect sacrifice for all sins for all time for the entire human race was that He had to be 100% human. Jesus had to live a completely sinless life to pay the full price for the sins of everyone who has ever lived, is living now, and is still to come. Jesus came for that purpose: to destroy the works of the devil (1 Corinthians 15:26, 54–57; 1 John 3:5, 8) and to completely abolish sin and death. God also used Matthew to confirm that Mary was a virgin. God clearly tells us in Matthew 1:18 that Mary and Joseph had not been together. It is a reference to the fact that they had never had sexual relations. We’ll see another reference later, but for now, we know that God is confirming for us that Mary was definitely a virgin. As we think about the miracle that took place, God choosing to come to earth as a baby, to live in an earthly dwelling, to face every temptation as we do yet never sin so that He could pay the price for our sin is overwhelmingly astounding! The fact that God loves us that much is truly hard to comprehend.

Day 2

In Matthew 1:19, we find that Joseph was a righteous man. As followers of Christ, we know that righteousness is only found through our relationship with Him since we’ve surrendered to Him as our King and Savior. So, there’s no doubt that Joseph followed God and desired to honor God through his life. If Joseph were just a religious man (someon...

Day 3

God is most definitely sovereign (absolutely in charge and in control to carry out His perfect will) in all things. God knew the heart of Joseph and so He sent an angel to speak to Joseph in a dream, as recorded in Matthew 1:20, "But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of ...

Day 4

In our American culture today, we do not investigate the meaning behind a name; that’s not to say that parents do not labor over what they will name each child because they do, but for most parents, it’s picking a name that sounds right, fits their family, does not sound hokey, or does not remind them of someone they do not like. In the Jewis...

Day 5

There are over 400 prophecies that Jesus perfectly fulfilled. The ones quoted in Matthew 1:23 come straight out of Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6–7 and Isaiah 8:10. The evidence of Jesus’ Lordship is unquestionable—still, many question whether Jesus is the One True Messiah. In “Science Speaks” (Moody Press, 1963), Peter Stoner determined that the pr...

Day 6

Obedience to our Lord and His Word is the evidence of a changed life. God’s Word tells us in Matthew 1:24, “And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife.” So, Joseph woke up and never doubted what God had spoken to Him through His angel and he obeyed what God told him to do. God spe...

Day 7

Joseph's willingness to trust and obey God was evidenced through his willingness to call Jesus by the name given to him by the angel God sent to Joseph in a dream. Another sign of Joseph trusting God was that Joesph did not have sexual relations with Mary until she gave birth to Jesus. Now, there is nowhere in Scripture that says Joseph must ...
