Day 1

Scripture to Read: Matthew 7:7–8

Jesus had already covered prayer in Matthew 6:5–15. Still, prayer is so important to our fellowship with our Heavenly Father that Jesus returned to the subject of prayer in Matthew 7. Jesus said in Matthew 7:7, Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Notice the progression in the way we are to pray. We start by asking. We must humble ourselves before God to ask God for anything because asking Him reminds us that we need Him and accomplish nothing apart from Him (John 15:5). As we ask, God promises to give us what we ask for. We must never assume that asking God for anything means He will provide us with anything. When we assume that asking God for anything means we get what we want, we are taking God’s Word out of context. Remember from Romans 8:26–27, “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” Our weakness is prayer, and the Holy Spirit takes our weakness and joins us in prayer, making our prayers according to God the Father’s perfect will. The only way to begin knowing God’s will is to continually crucify our fleshly desires and be transformed in how we think (Romans 12:2).

Challenge & Application

· Why did Jesus return to the subject of prayer in Matthew 7 after discussing prayer in Matthew 6? · How are you being transformed in your mind each day so that as you ask God, you are learning to ask according to His will?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 2

We’re still unpacking Matthew 7:7 as Jesus said, Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” In our progression, we move from asking to seeking. So, what does God desire us to seek, knowing He desires us to find something? God tells us in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first His kingdom and His ri...

Day 3

The third part of the progression in how we pray is that we must knock. Jesus said in Matthew 7:7, Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” To knock means we are invited to come to God’s door and when we knock, He lovingly opens His door. God’s door to His throne of grace is not locked, ...

Day 4

Jesus has given us a beautiful picture in Matthew 7:7–8 on how we are to ask and keep on asking, seek, and keep on seeking, and knock and keep on knocking as we grow in our intimate fellowship with our Heavenly Father. Then, Jesus uses the illustration of the father/son relationship to help everyone better understand how loving, gracious, and...

Day 5

When we consider all that our Lord has taught us on prayer, His illustration in Matthew 7:9–10 helps us better understand how incredibly giving our Heavenly Father is with all His children. God tells us in James 1:17–18, “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no ...

Day 6

Jesus truly challenges the idea that God the Father is unloving, uncaring, unkind, or withholds His gifts from His children. Jesus said in Matthew 7:11, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” We are all evil apart from Chr...

Day 7

Our Lord has opened our eyes to the fullness of God the Father’s love for us in Matthew 7:7–11, and then Jesus said in Matthew 7:12, “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” Since God has given us so much through our relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ, we, in ...
