Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:21
In Matthew 5:21, Jesus says, as He taught His followers, “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not commit murder ’and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’” Murder has never been acceptable in God’s sight. As Jesus spoke to the people, He quoted out of God’s Law as is recorded in Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17, “You shall not murder.” This was, and still is, God’s sixth commandment in the Ten Commandments. We know life is precious, but the reason God commanded us not to murder is because we are made in His image. God tells us in Genesis 9:6, “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man.” The human race is the only part of God’s creation made in His image, so God wants us to treat each other with the highest respect and love. God tells us again in Romans 13:9, “For this, ‘You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,’ and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” God desires us to walk in His love the same way He loves us. Jesus said it this way in John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” God wants us to love just as deeply as He loves us.
