Scripture to Read: John 7:1–9
Jesus had gone to Galilee, His home, and not Judea because He knew the religious leaders wanted to kill Him. But we read in John 7:2 that the Feast of Booths was about to take place. The Feast of Booths was the sixth of God's seven annual festival periods and was celebrated for seven days in the fall (during September – October) (Leviticus 23, Deuteronomy 16, Zechariah 14, and John 7). God had commanded Israel to celebrate the Feast of Booths by constructing and living in temporary housing built out of tree branches and other naturally occurring materials (Leviticus 23:39–40, 42). So, it was a harvest-time festival of thanksgiving, a time to rejoice over God's abundant blessings. It also reminded the Israelites that God cared for them when they journeyed in the wilderness after being delivered from their Egyptian bondage (Leviticus 23:43). This festival was considered the greatest. So, in John 7:3, we read how Jesus’ brothers encouraged Him to go to Judea and make Himself known, even though His brothers did not yet believe Jesus to be the Messiah (John 7:5). Therefore, Jesus waited on God the Father’s perfect plan. He told His brothers to go but that He would stay in Galilee. Jesus never did anything the Father had not commanded Him to do, so He waited to hear from His Father before going to Judea. We must continually pursue our fellowship with our Heavenly Father and His Word through Christ so that we listen to Him and not do anything ahead of His perfect will for us.
Challenge & Application
• What did you learn about the Feast of Booths, and why was it such an important festival for the Jews?
• What perfect example did Christ model for us as He sent His brothers to the festival and as He waited in Galilee?
