Scripture to Read: John 1:14–15
God led John to come back to Christ as being fully God and fully man. We read in John 1:14–15, “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John *testified about Him and cried out, saying, ‘This was He of whom I said,’ ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’” It’s so important to understand that Christ became a man. He humbled Himself, was made in the likeness of men (Philippians 2:7), and chose to live among the Jews. As God led John to write, John declared about himself, Peter, and James that they actually saw Christ’s glory (Luke 9:32, John 2:11, 2 Peter 1:16–21, 1 John 1:1). So, John wrote as an eyewitness of what he knew he had seen in Christ. John got to see the glory that Christ had (and still has) because it belongs only to Him as the One and only begotten Son of the Father. Christ is also full of grace and truth, for He is our grace and truth (Ephesians 2:8, John 14:6). Then, God had John share what John the Baptist said about Christ, that Christ was the One who would follow John the Baptist and that “He who comes after me has a higher rank than I and has priority over me, for He existed before me.” Christ is eternal, and there’s none above Him as God and King.
Challenge & Application
• Why is John’s testimony so strong as an eyewitness of Christ’s glory?
• Why is it important to understand that Christ was fully God and fully human at the same time?
