Day 5

Scripture to Read: John 1:11–13

When Christ first came to this world, He came to His chosen people, the nation of Israel. The Israelites, especially the religious leaders, knew the prophecies in the Old Testament about their coming Messiah. There are around 360-plus prophecies about the coming Messiah in the Old Testament. So, when Christ came to this world, He came just as the prophets had foretold. But even with God’s Truth, here is what God led John to write about the Jews of Jesus’ day, John 1:11–13, “He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” Christ came, and many of the Jews refused to receive Him as the promised Messiah. Though they knew the prophecies, the darkness of their sin-filled hearts kept them blind to the Truth (Christ) being there with them. But there were some Jews who received Christ and surrendered to Him as Messiah and Lord. And, as God’s Word says, those who received Christ were adopted into God’s family as His own. God clearly shows us in John 1:13 that salvation has nothing to do with our family lineage but is all about walking according to His will. God’s perfect will was to send Christ and show us His love (Romans 5:8) through His life and death.

Challenge & Application

• Why did so many of the Jews miss Christ as the promised Messiah written about in the Old Testament? • Why do so many people still miss Christ as the One True King, God, and Savior of this sin-filled world?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

John is one of the original 12 disciples of Christ. God led John to write the Book of John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, and Revelation. John lovingly refers to himself in the Book of John as one of the disciples “whom Jesus loved” (John 13:23, John 19:26, John 20:2, John 21:7, John 21:20). So, John had a beautiful understanding of how much Christ...

Day 2

Knowing Christ is God is essential to our faith. With all of the religions in the world claiming to be “a way” to God or “a way” to heaven or “a way” to escape eternal punishment, we know that Christ is “The Way” and that there is no other way. As God the Holy Spirit led John to write, we read in John 1:4–5, “In Him was life, and the life was...

Day 3

God uses all of us, as Christians, to proclaim our Lord Jesus Christ to this lost world and each other as we walk with Him each day. God used John the Baptist to proclaim that Jesus is the Christ, the One prophesied about throughout the Old Testament. God had John write in John 1:6–8, “There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He...

Day 4

Christ came to this world to set every captive free from our bondage to sin and its power. As we saw yesterday, God called John the Baptist to proclaim Christ’s arrival, knowing Christ came to fulfill the Father’s perfect will. We find this prophecy about our Lord Jesus Christ in Isaiah 61:1, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because th...

Day 6

God led John to come back to Christ as being fully God and fully man. We read in John 1:14–15, “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John *testified about Him and cried out, saying, ‘This was He of whom I said,’ ‘He who comes after me ha...

Day 7

Christ came to give His life so that everyone made in His image could have life eternal through Him. Real life is not possible apart from Christ. Even when we consider the reason that we were created, we have no real purpose apart from Christ because everything this world offers us is fleeting/temporary/short-lived and only leaves us empty an...
