Scripture to Read: John 1:38
The two men who started following Jesus were immediately questioned by Jesus. We read in John 1:38, “And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, ‘What do you seek?’ They said to Him, ‘Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?’” Jesus challenged these two young men to examine their hearts and ask themselves, “Why are we following Him? Do we really want to know Him?” This is the question Jesus asks each person before they decide to follow Him. Why are we choosing to follow Him? Are we just curious, or are we ready to follow and know Him as our King and Lord? These two new disciples of Christ answered well by asking Jesus, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” They were making it profoundly clear that they were ready to be with Him and stay where He was staying, to be by His side and to learn from Him. The fact that they called Him “Rabbi” let Jesus know they wanted to learn and grow and have Him as their “Teacher.” Jesus said of those who choose to follow Him, in Luke 6:47–48, “Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.” Christ is our Rock, and by following Him we can weather any storm.

• Why is it important to be able to answer Christ’s question, “What do you seek?” before being able to follow Him as Lord?
• How have you seen your life transformed by our Lord Jesus Christ since surrendering to Him?
